Angel Munoz [eyn-juhl moo-nyaws] is Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of NewWorld.com, Inc., a Texas corporation with investments in the video game industry.
In the March 2000 edition of Texas Monthly Biz, Munoz was selected as one of the Top 25 “Most Powerful Texans in High Tech” and was featured on the magazine's cover along with Leonard H. Roberts, the former Chairman and CEO of RadioShack (Tandy) and the late writer, artist and community activist Ana Sisnett.
Born in New York City, Munoz became a stockbroker in 1985 and later launched his own investment firm specializing in emerging technologies.
On December 24, 1995, Munoz joined the video game industry by launching the Adrenaline Vault website, an award-winning source of video game information. Munoz is currently the publisher of the website and the producer of the Avault Podcast, a weekly show available on iTunes, Podcast.com and the Adrenaline Vault.
On June 27, 1997, Munoz launched the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL), the world’s first organization to sanction computer game competitions as a professional sport. Under Munoz' management the CPL hosted 60 international gaming events, sanctioned 600 international qualifiers and awarded over $3 million in cash prizes. Due to his pioneering work at the CPL, Munoz is occasionally referred to as the "father of professional gaming." On August 25, 2008, the CPL was sold to an investment group from the United Arab Emirates, and on June 12, 2009 the new CPL announced that it had opened its first Asian office in the City of Chengdu, China.
On March 6, 2001, Munoz co-founded the Cyberathlete Amateur League (CAL), one of the largest online video game leagues in the USA. At its peak CAL had 20,000 gaming teams and 600,000 registered members. On November 14, 2008, CAL was sold to CPL Holdings Group.
On December 16, 2006, Munoz initiated Severity, a project to develop video game standards for multiplayer competitions. The project was licensed to Escalation Studios, the company that developed DOOM Resurrection for the iPhone.
Independently, Munoz owned a Dallas art gallery named Reflection Fine Art (now Samuel Lynne Galleries), which is currently owned by restaurant entrepreneur Phil Romano and contemporary artist JD Miller.
Additionally, Munoz assisted in the promotion of the Dallas rock band The Bright, and had a small acting role in the low-budget film Striking Range with Lou Diamond Phillips and Yancy Butler.
