Greetings, Adventurers!

Concept art helps the team find creative workarounds to technical or narrative restraints. A character’s role in gameplay, their personality, and backstory all influence their design. This episode of Forged in Aeternum follows that process for some of your favorite female characters like Grace O’Malley.

Check out the full discussion on how creative problem solving brings characters to life in the video below:

Designing Skye

Concept Artist Kiana Hamm walked us through the creation of a character that’s integral to the Fellowship & Fire narrative — Skye.

“Skye was interesting to design because she was our first female lore character that was a true hardened warrior,” Kiana said. “We wanted to use this opportunity to explore different body types and gave her a more stocky, athletic build to match her warrior lifestyle. We also wanted to pay tribute to her Scottish heritage while still fitting into our distinct ‘Aeternum’ fashion sense. I think we found a good happy medium there. I looked at a lot of historical Scottish and Celtic artifacts during the research process and incorporated them into her outfit.”

“We also kept her story and personality in mind while creating her concept – she’s a tough-as-nails fighter, but she has a hidden soft side and sadness after what happened to her and her spear-sisters. Her battle-ready outfit may look intimidating, but the hair obscuring her face and cool blue color palette betray some of that vulnerability. I had a lot of fun designing her, and I hope players are excited to meet her in Aeternum.”
